New Mommy
Physically, Ethan is the picture of health. As Luke noted in his previous post, Ethan was born weighing 7lbs 12oz and measuring 20.67inches. As newborn babies are expected to do, Ethan lost some weight during his first few days of life. When we left the hospital Thursday morning, Ethan weighed 7lbs 6.5oz. When he was weighed at his first pediatrician's appointment Monday afternoon (10/31/05) he weighed 8lbs 1oz. He had gained 10.5oz in 4 days! Having experienced his powerful suck and amazingly accurate ability to latch on correctly, this was no surprise to me. :-D However, it was very reassuring, because newborns are only expected to regain their birth weight within the first two weeks of life. Ethan has not only accomplished that goal in record time, but he has exceeded it!
In my ever so objective opinion, Ethan is also one of the most handsome babies there are. Prior to his birth I had braced myself, knowing that many babies start out funny looking (red splotches, oddly placed birth marks, etc.), and grow into their cuteness later. But Ethan's least attractive feature is this tiny little white head that he's had on his upper lip since birth. You can hardly even see it. The only birth mark he has is actually a very cute strawberry colored mark at the base of his skull called a "stork bite". Even that will fade away by the time he starts elementary school. All very superficial stuff, but ..... blessings just the same.
Speaking of blessings. In my previous post announcing my impending induction, I mentioned that Luke's mother and eldest sister were in Mexico and that we couldn't get ahold of them. Well, they returned from Mexico late Sunday night and immediately came to the hospital. So they too were able share in the amazing pleasure of spending hours upon end memorizing the decor of the hospital waiting room along with the rest of our family. :-D
Check back tomorrow for Monday's pictures of Ethan in his Holloween outfit! :-D
(I plan to take at least one picture of Ethan each Monday of his life for the first month at least. My hope is to post these pictures on this blog each week along with a little update on the week's highlights.)
